s slight diversion but very relavant

I am almost done with this book.
I read it once before at least ten years ago.
It was first published in 2004.
Back in January when I started paying attention to the talk about the coronavirus,
I decided to pull it out and tackle it again.
Such a fascinating read in so many ways!

In 1918 World War I was coming to a close.
The United States under the leadership of Woodrow Wilson was finally getting engaged.
The President held off for the longest time,
but when he decided that the USA would get involved he was all in.

Troops were being called up and trained by the thousands before being sent overseas.
The training camps were filled to overflowing.
Each facility was way overcapacity.

History is pretty sure that the influenza epidemic started on a small pig farm in the middle of Kansas.
A young man,
one of the first recruits of the war,
a resident of a small town in Kansas,
was stricken with what we know now to be a flu virus.
When he arrived at the overcrowded training center, he fell ill.
From there the unknown bug spread like wildfire.
A year and a half later the number of people who had died from this flu
numbered in the millions.
The suffering and loss of life are incomprehensible.

All during this epidemic, there was a race in the medical world to identify the bug and to find a cure. They never did until many years later.

My grandfather was on one of the ships that delivered troops to the war.
He arrived, and like most all of these transport ships, it was filled with desperately ill soldiers.
He never got off of the boat.
They turned around and brought all of them back home because the war was over.

This is a fascinating, terrifying, sobering read!!
The medical world has come so far in these last hundred years,
and yet this coronavirus is still causing great fear in the world.
It's the unknown that is so scary.

Remember this...
God is sovereign.
He knows.
He is in control.
Nothing happens apart from His determinate will.
We trust Him and rest in His word.

a pigeon story

A couple of days ago I promised you a pigeon story.
Well, here it is.

Amanda and I got set loose alone in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Everybody else had gone back to the boat for lunch.
We were free as a couple of birds.
We decided to do a little shopping and sight-seeing around town.
I love the architecture, the courtyards full of trees and flowers, the vibrant colors, and the friendly people.
She had never visited San Juan before.

On our way back to board the ship,
We decided to stop by one of the courtyards to feed the birds.
A man was conveniently selling zip lock bags full of bird food.
Amanda shelled out five dollars for the treats.
I waded into the sea of birds to be the one to hand them out.
Of course, I am the one who will forge ahead into a sea of birds.
If you look closely you can see a pigeon on my left shoulder.
At first I thought, "How cute is that!"
"These pigeons must be tame from so much food from the tourists."
Little did I know.

When I opened the bag of food they swarmed all over me.
Notice I now have one on my head,
another one on my left arm,
and one more coming in for a landing.
You can see the food in my hands.
I hadn't even gotten the bag open yet.
It was the one on my head that troubled me the most.
No, actually it was the fact that they are filthy and germ-ridden that gave me pause.

Amanda started laughing hysterically and I freaked out.
I threw the food and the bag down to the ground so that the pigeons would stop attacking me.
Then I got out of that courtyard as fast as I could.
I could feel the talons of those birds on my body all afternoon.
I couldn't get to the shower fast enough.

The moral of this story is...
Don't feed the pigeons in a strange town.
They will attack you!
They don't like you!
They just want the food!

faces & places

Lucy made Erika and I matching skirts.
Here we are wearing them proudly at dinner one night.

Lobster night.
Several members of our family appeared in lobster attire.
Mark has lobsters on his socks.

🦞

That big snow moon was with us on the first weekend of our cruise.
You can just imagine this moon over the water.
It was so beautiful.

🌕

Almost every night the whole family assembled on the Lido Deck after dinner.
We played The Name Game.
We all love to play.
The people walking by were amused at our sometimes loud antics.

The lobby.
Our meeting place.

Breakfast is served in the main dining room.
The older kids preferred to find their morning meal on the Lido Deck.
That was fine with us!

All of us together in Puerto Rico except for Bubba.
He stayed on the boat to rest, read, and relax.
Hiking to a fort didn't seem as appealing to him as it did to us.

Grammy enjoying the view.
That is the Puerto Rico government building above my head.
The beauty was awe inspiring!

Here is Bubba back on the boat. He looks happy and relaxed.
He was!

😃

This was our favorite store in San Juan!

❤️

There is a really funny story about these pigeons in Old Town San Juan.
I will tell it next post.

 🤣

This trip was magical.
Memories will last forever.
So thankful for pictures and words to bring it all back to life.
Sitting here every afternoon writing this blog is my absolute joy!

take your grandkids on a cruise...they will love it

Jake, Eli, Archie ~ swimming at Amber Cove

Lucy zip-lining.
All of the kids wanted to do this but you had to be fourteen.

Archie & Harry in St. Thomas.
Chillin' ~ It was hot.
We saw lots of chickens and roosters strutting around.

🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓🐓

The boy cousins at the fort in Puerto Rico.
Boys love old cannons!

Harry climbing a rock face.
This is one of the things that he does best.
He made it to the top by the way...barefooted.

👣

Our four year old boy wonder Walter at the fort.

Boy soldiers!

We saw lots of Iguanas.
Mark took this close-up for me.
I couldn't get anywhere near that big guy.

😧

Walt started putting on quite the show on this round stage.
He was pulling off some amazing moves...
quite spontaneously.

😎

Harry found a gorgeous piece of driftwood for me.
I couldn't take it back on the boat.

Gus allowed himself to be buried in the sand at Grand Turk Island.
And...

Lucy got her hair braided!

Of course they loved the folded towel animals.

🐈🐶🐘 🐯

The candy shop was a huge hit!
I took them there on the last day because I had gotten a 5$ off coupon for my birthday.
I spent almost 25$.
Should have known I wouldn't get out of there cheaply.

🍭

Bubba and I were so proud of these kids.
They got along so well,
found so many things to do...
never once got bored.
They represented all of us so well with their good manners and good attitudes all week.
We would take them again in a minute!

THEY HAD SO MUCH FUN!!!

He finally did it!

I'm gonna keep this post short and sweet.
This is Bubba zip-lining.
First stop on the cruise ~ Amber Cove, Dominican Republic.
He said it was on his bucket list.
He's always wanted to try.
He is 75 years old.
Keeping it strong ~ keeping himself young.
My hero and best friend!
50 years together!

❤️❤️

birthday girl

I had my dream birthday this year...
turned 72 on a cruise ship in San Juan, Puerto Rico
surrounded by my whole family.
From Bubba down to Walter they were all there.

The excitement was high on awakening as we docked.
This was my third visit to Puerto Rico and it didn't disappoint.
We spent the morning at Castillo San Cristobal,
an expansive fortress overlooking the vast Atlantic Ocean.
Thanking God for His good, good gifts.
Offering prayers of praise and adoration for this perfect day.

My children ~ dear to my heart,
always in my prayers,
funny and smart,
a joy!

While we were at the fort,
we flew a kite in the likeness of the flag of Puerto Rico.
It was so dreamy to be in that  gorgeous setting
with all of the kids running around
 flying this beautiful kite
 in the bright blue sky
over the ocean.

🪁

Walt and his Gram.
He took his kite flying very seriously.

😎

Jake and Grammy taking it all in.
Epic Eli...our chief photographer and video master,
took this picture and the one of me below.

📷

Lucy bought this hand carved wooden bowl for me in a little shop in Old San Juan.
She presented it at dinner that night.
It made me tear up...to be reminded...
"You are so loved."

So, I turned seventy two.
I'm standing on our balcony somewhere out over the Atlantic Ocean.
This is pure raw me.
No filters,
minimal make up with just a touch of sun on my face.
The same "bedroom" eyes I was born with.
My two new front teeth.
(the others crumbled away from the radiation treatments)
I love that you can see the scar on my neck from the cancer surgery.
My takeaway from this day with the people I love...
"You are so loved."
Perfect Happy Birthday

❤️

I want to thank everyone on Facebook for the sweet birthday greetings.
As soon as I got on the ship the battery in my phone decided to go completely dead.
I had to wait until I got home to truly enjoy the posts.
As always, Facebook birthdays are such a joy!
Thank you friends!

beginnings

We followed another cruise ship out of Port Canaveral.
This is one of the most exciting parts of the voyage...
the moment when you hear the engines of the boat come to life
and then feel the huge ship start to move.
It's right then that you experience a sense of great exhilaration.
The journey is all ahead of you.
Joy and anticipation take over your soul.

We all headed for the front of the ship which was only steps away from our cabin.
Being February, the weather was a little chilly leaving port.
Amanda ran to get my scarf and Lucy's blanket Lily.
I had worn my North Face jacket which I never had to wear again.
Everyone was so excited.
The cold and wind didn't bother us at all.

We passed a beach and were soon out in the ocean...
not to stop or set foot on land for another 36 hours.
This is when you enjoy the boat and get used to the rocking motion of the swells.
This is when you savor the delicious meals and decide what fun activities catch your interest.
This is when you sit on your deck and watch the ocean go by.
This is when you can't wait to get into bed to be rocked to sleep.
I particularly enjoy just being on the ship.

It was so exciting to open the door of our suite.
Amanda had the stewards decorate our room.
"Happy Anniversary" banners were everywhere...
hanging from the ceiling ~  swaying with the movement of the ship.

Our towel sculpture was in the shape of a heart.

❤️

We had a king size bed with a view to absolutely die for.

A jetted tub and...

A walk-in closet.
Our lodgings were exquisite.
Much like living in a perfectly outfitted tiny house as seen on HGTV!

Our first sunset and...

Seven super excited children who were just before having the time of their life.
