the fury of nature

Here where we stay, on Thursday, at about 4:00 pm, we had a wonderful afternoon thunderstorm. Lots of lightening and thunder and a good, steady rain which we needed so badly.
Over by Lake Mayer the storm turned destructive.
The house that you see in the first picture belongs to a friend of ours. One of those old, massive oak trees that one sees often in Savannah was picked up by the fierce wind and put down on top of his house.
After dinner last night we drove over to survey the damage. There was a red sign posted on a pine tree left untouched that said DESTROYED. The whole house lay in ruins around the tree that had fallen into the living room, dining room, and down the hall.
There was a massive crane very slowly and methodically lifting pieces of the tree off of the roof, one at a time.
We talked to Kenny for a long while watching this process. He had not been home when this happened, thankfully. There was other damage in the area but nothing of this magnitude. The church above is on the corner of Montgomery Crossroad and Heatherwood Drive.
Just thought I would report this story..........more later, maybe. Cathy
